Man vs. Self Just like every other teenager his age, Charlie has to deal with growing up. His biggest problem is himself. Charlie acts accordingly to whether or not the other person would like or dislike his actions, instead of doing what is right. By giving into temporary desires, he hurts them in an even worse way. For example, Patrick was depressed about Brad, so he kissed Charlie. He allowed this because he wanted to be a good friend, but he actually wasn't. Patrick hurt himself by doing it, and Charlie was also hurting him by not being honest.

Man vs. Self Another example of a man vs. self conflict is due to his relationship with Mary Elizabeth. He didn't really like her in the same way that she liked him, but he didn't want to hurt her, so he stayed with her. Also, he tried to get any further with Sam even though he loved her. If he would've pursued her like he wanted to, both himself and Sam would've been happier. In the end, he becomes stronger and his obedient attitude changes.
